"Ladder Ranch"
Too much water to fish in one day. That's why, in addition to our daily fishing option, we offer multi-day trips to this working ranch on the Little Snake River and Battle Creek, located on the Colorado and Wyoming border. Exploring this section of the country will take you back in time. Settlement history abounds here on the ranch where the renowned fur trader Jeremiah Johnson once called home. There is about 4 miles of the Little Snake River to explore and the wild Rainbow Trout are most eager to take dry flies throughout the summer and fall. The river is shaded with cottonwood trees and is an easy river to wade. Most of the trout are a respectable 12 to 16 inches but there are fish regularly caught 18-20 inches and better. The river fishes best from mid June through October but can also be fished prior to winter run-off in March. It is a dry fly fishing dream with fish looking to take surface flies even if there is no "hatch".
5 miles of Battle Creek run through the ranch ending with its confluence with the Little Snake. Battle Creek is a crystal clear small stream fisher's paradise. The Trout population is abundant with mostly Rainbows and a few Cutthroat and Brook trout. This is dry fly fishing with your favorite 2, 3, or 4 weight, walking and fishing as far as you want to go. If you enjoy creek fishing you will love to spend a day on Battle Creek. It is mostly open with cotton wood groves and willows shading the water.
